History of The Cape House: The Cape House is a historical house built in 1809, made from hand-hewed logs for the foundation and maple hardwood and yellow pine floors throughout the house. The original stepping stone used by the early settlers is still located in its original place by the front porch, and is still used today. When you enter the dining room you will be greeted by an antique hand-braided, oval rug made from clothes once used. The living room consists of a built-in bookcase that behind the bookcase exposes a hatch in the floor which was used to help slaves escape through a secret passage that led to a tunnel (part of the Underground Railroad). This tunnel was later hand dug for the basement.
Situated on 1.8 acres of land is a barn that was used as a carriage house and woodworking shop. A chicken coop in the earlier days was turned into a guesthouse that was used to accommodate the pilots who navigated The St. Lawrence Seaway. Later on, the owner turned The Cape House into a bed and breakfast. On the property, you will see an existing outhouse that has been recently renovated, as well as many old black walnut, sugar maple, birch and pine trees to enjoy.
